The number of citizens amounts to 14,962,400 (January 1999).
Over 53% are Kazakhs. Among the other ethnic groups in Kazakhstan, Russians are the most numerous.

     Language

The state language is Kazakh.
In practice, Russian is used as a second official language and as the language of inter-ethnic communication.

     Religion

Kazakhstan is a secular state.
The Kazakhs are Sunni Muslims, but Christianity, Buddhism and Judaism are widespread.
